One witness told MediaCorp Radio's 938LIVE that orange sparks flew when lightning struck between 4pm and 5pm at Merlion Park. Staff in the vicinity said they heard an explosion followed by a loud thud when broken pieces fell to the ground. About 30 people dashed into a nearby restaurant for safety. Other onlookers continued to take photos of the 36-year-old tourism icon. - 938LIVE/vm (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/cna/cgi-bin/search/search_7days.pl?status=&search=merlion&id=412182) From channelnewsasia.com 1Mar 2009 SINGAPORE : Contractors have been engaged to repair the Singapore Merlion after it was struck by lightning on Saturday. For now, the public is not allowed access to the 36-year-old tourism icon at the mouth of the Singapore River. Temporary barricades have been erected for safety reasons. Despite this, tourists and locals are still eagerly snapping pictures from afar. When Channel NewsAsia last visited the structure on Sunday, water was still flowing from sculpture's mouth. Debris from parts of the statue's head that fell off after lightning struck were cleared on Saturday night. No one was injured. The Singapore Tourism Board said it is waiting for a full assessment from contractors before deciding when to allow public access to the statue, and whether to erect a lightning conductor to prevent a repeat incident. - CNA/ms (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/cna/cgi-bin/search/search_7days.pl?status=&search=merlion&id=412309) ok. after reading such news. i felt terrified. what is going to happen to Singapore? i think it's a not a good sign. something must be happening this year in Singapore. and whats going to happen?? am i going to die? am i going to de at such a young age... sigh... i hope everything is alright. god bless everyone in Singapore. :( ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
